The purpose of the first meeting is twofold.
Firstly, it’s for us to find out about you. Where are you right now? What are you working towards? What do you need help with? Do you know the options available to you? Do you need financial advice? What sort of financial advice are you looking for? What type of adviser are you looking to work with?
Secondly, it’s for you to find out about us. How can we help? What do we do for you? How do we charge? How do we look after our clients? What do we do well? What experience do we have?
For a long time, much of the industry has not charged for the initial consultation. The problem with this is that:
- Financial planners are not subsidised by the government. We don’t get paid by anyone for a “free consultation”.
- The industry has become a profession. I have a university degree in financial planning, completed post graduate studies and have years of experience as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER. You don’t see surgeons/dentists/accountants/lawyers offering free consultations for valuable advice.
- Once upon a time, planners relied on insurance and investment commissions so charging for the first consultation was a put off to a potential client. We don’t rely on commissions so this doesn’t work. We are fee only for new clients.
For these reasons, we charge a modest $220 including GST for the first meeting.
If we feel you need personal advice, we will give you a quote for it after the consultation. Should you choose to go ahead with the personal advice, we will waive the initial consultation fee.
General information/advice versus personal advice
By law, we can only provide general information/advice in the first meeting. Anything discussed is of a general nature only and is not tailored to your personal circumstances. You should seek personal advice prior to acting on any information provided.
By law, personal advice must be provided in a written document. Personal advice is tailored to your personal circumstances and you can act on the recommendations. As mentioned above, if you choose to go ahead with the personal advice, we will waive the initial consultation fee.
